Backrooms experiences without the engine overhead
Backrooms Maker is the ecosystem for building backrooms-style worlds on the web. NullZoner is the editor — where you draw, preview, and play. It started as a fun side project and grew into something bigger. Whether you're a content creator, gamer, or developer, NullZoner strips away engine overhead so you can focus on layout, mood, and exploration.
Why build here
Web-native, opinionated, and built for scale — from a single room to infinite procedural worlds.
-
Browser-native
Lives on the web — no software install like Unity or Unreal. Open a tab and start building.
-
2D authoring, 3D output
Work in 2D on a canvas. The engine connects walls, lighting, and walkable space into a playable 3D world.
-
Build big
Finite maps, infinite authored worlds, or procedural generation — because the backrooms have no end.
-
Do little, get big results
Stop sweating the small details. Draw shapes, set lighting zones, and let the engine handle the rest.
-
Real-time preview
See changes as you make them. Quick iterations mean faster map building and better results.
-
Liminal by design
Yellow carpet, fluorescent hum, endless hallways — the backrooms aesthetic is baked in from the start.
How it works
Three steps from blank canvas to entering the backrooms.
-
1
Draw walls and zones in 2D
Place shapes, define lighting zones, and lay out your level on an intuitive canvas.
-
2
Preview in 3D in real time
Watch your flat layout become a walkable 3D space with lighting and atmosphere.
-
3
Play in first person
Hit play, click to enter, and explore with WASD — just like a first-person game.
Beyond one level
Backrooms Maker is the umbrella for creation tools; NullZoner is the editor today. Future products — material tools, story builders, and more — will join the ecosystem under their own names. NullZoner itself will grow: pool rooms, liminal levels, and full Backrooms lore support. The long-term goal is a browser game engine for all kinds of experiences.
- → Pool rooms and water-level aesthetics
- → General liminal and unsettling spaces
- → Full Backrooms lore level support
- → A web-native engine for any genre
Infinite authored mode (WIP)
Imagine connecting your map to a hallway from someone else's map — user-generated content stitched into an endless backrooms space. Think No Man's Sky, but every corridor is built by the community. This is the big goal: a tool where there is no end to the backrooms.
A community-driven future
We want this tool to grow with the people who use it.
- Public maps and games — share what you build so everyone can experience it.
- Connected infinite worlds — link your maps into a shared endless space.
- Feature requests and bugs — help shape what gets built next.
- Code and 3D model contributions — submit models others can use in their maps.
Early preview — read this first
- Bugs and performance issues are expected. We're actively working to make this the best experience possible, but this is experimental software.
-
Saving, importing, and exporting may fail.
Your work lives in the browser — export
.backroomsfiles regularly so you don't lose progress. - Desktop is recommended. The editor and first-person controls are built for keyboard and mouse on a large screen.
- Free for now. We're having fun building tools for creators, gamers, and developers — use it as a novelty, a toy, or a serious tool.
